Orc Pilot Bust from Kromlech

I remember last years’ Hussar as if it happened a week ago. As a reminder I also have a few souvenirs that I brought back. One of it was an interesting bust.

Ekstra! - pomyślałem - tylko kiedy ja go pomaluje?

I mean the first bust released by Kromlech. At this extraordinary event I met Maciej, who has presented me with, at that time pre-release, sculpt of  an orc pilot in a flying cap and goggles. Excellent! – only when will I find the time to paint it? And so months have gone by and the orc was gathering dust. Until one chilly and dark day of march, while searching through my shelf in search of inspiration I found him. At that time I knew that his time has come.

Blast from the past :) U can see the bust next to Sgt.Oddball

C’tan has painted him in one day and he had one it in such a way that not only I had to pick up my jaw from the floor, the photo that I am talking about is on Kromlech website next to the model. I knew that even after 100 hour of work I would not be able to match that, but it is worth a shot. I already had my action plan thought out so I got to work.

Rzeźba sama w sobie jest świetna. Odlew IMO jeszcze lepszy (brak nadlewek, niedelewek, przesunięć, itd.).

The sculpt in itself is great. The cast in my opinion is even better (no flash, no parts missing no mould mismatch, and so on). I have prepared a simple plinth, pinned everything and got to painting.

I wtedy mnie olśniło.

Painting of his ‘snout’ was interesting. I have experimented a lot with airbrush and various washes. I also liked the concept of drooling lips. Next new thing for me was painting of the texture on the belts. I was fascinated by a bust painted by YellowOne, I wanted to get a similar effect, have I done it I will let you be the judge of that. The greatest challenge was the goggles. At the beginning I had no idea what to do with them. I didn’t want to copy C’tans idea. I wanted to make something original. That is when I was enlightened. Ork is a pilot, he looks like a proud guy, you can see it in his face, that he did a good job. Nuclear explosion! He is standing some ware safe and enjoys the view of the destruction that is the author of. That is it. Now how to paint it?

I tried to copy this mushroom cloud :P

Lubię nadawać pracą nazwy, to moim zdaniem dodaje im jakiegoś tam charakteru i unikalności.

Freehand painting isn’t my forte and I do not hide it. The more the problem to obtain the result that I wanted. In the net I have found some pictures of mushroom clouds that I started to sketch and then transferred this to the goggles. This is the history of the goggles. I had some more details to finish up and the model was ready. As the last thing that I left for myself was the creation of the nameplate for the plinth. I like to title my works that gives them, in my opinion, character and uniqueness.

And here you have a signature on a pedestal. I have to thank my mom for a great job :)

Jeżeli ktoś pamięta automatowego Metal Sluga to na koniec każdego stage'a można było usłyszeć specyficzny wojskowy głos odczytujący właśnie to zdanie :D Tak więc, gotowy projekt podesłałem do mojej rodzicielki, a ona w swojej firmie zleciła wycięcie go laserowo z blachy o grubości 5mm. Gotowe litery jeszcze maznąłem, a następnie przykleiłem do piedestału. A o to i efekt końcowy.

In case of this model and the history I wanted to tell, there was only one thing that came to my mind 'Mission Completed'. If any of you still remember the arcade game Metal Slug, at the end of every stage you could hear a characteristic voice that spoke this sentence. The finished project has been sent over to my mum, that had it cut out of 5mm thick plate in her company. Finished lettering has been painted and glued to the plinth. And this is the end effect.

I hope that you like the end effect. I am quite happy with my third bust in my life. You will probably be able to see it at the tournament in Toruń, that I am planning to attend.

  1. Beautiful work, love the idea of the explosion! Great contrast too, I have to check my contrast all the time, make it brighter I say in my head. I like what you have done keeping the biggest contrast to the face. I do think the straps could do with some deeper contrast. Fantastic work none the less.
